Winter’s Worst Cold Snap Yet Begins Today

Get ready for an impressively potent cold front that’s marching south through the northwestern half of Texas this morning! Temperatures in the Panhandle have already plunged into the single digits, and we’re seeing some jaw-dropping twenty to thirty-degree drops behind the cold front’s passage! As we embrace the day, watch this front sweep through the southeastern half of Texas. Today, the southern half will still enjoy high temperatures in the delightful 70s and 80s! Most folks will feel those warmer temperatures in the late morning or early afternoon, but don’t worry—much colder air will sweep in right after the cold front passes! Just remember, wind chills will make it feel a whopping twenty degrees cooler than the actual air temperature, so bundle up!

In the Texas Panhandle, snow showers are set to continue through the afternoon, with the possibility of localized accumulations over one inch—how exciting! And keep an eye out for patchy freezing drizzle and light freezing rain that could pop up in Northwest Texas, Texoma, and North Texas. While widespread travel impacts aren’t on the horizon due to the spotty nature of the freezing drizzle, there’s still a chance for some slick spots on bridges, overpasses, and elevated surfaces—so be cautious!

This afternoon and evening, we can expect scattered showers and storms to light up the skies across the eastern third to forty percent of Texas! Some of those storms in Southeast Texas and the Golden Triangle might even bring hail and heavy rain—what a thrill! Precipitation will start winding down from west to east Wednesday morning!

Tonight, it’s going to get chilly, with low temperatures below zero likely across the Texas Panhandle! Wind chill temperatures will plummet to ten to twenty below zero—brrrr! Expect single-digit low temperatures (both above and below zero) on Tuesday and Wednesday nights in the Panhandle, West Texas, Northwest Texas, Big Country, and Texoma. These areas, along with North Texas, may be braving two to three days below freezing. Across the majority of Texas (except the Borderland and the Rio Grande Valley), freezing temperatures will be the norm most nights this week! This arctic cold snap will truly make its mark, especially across the northern half of Texas. While it’ll be a bit milder in the southern half, it certainly won’t be a statewide hard freeze!

But wait, there’s more! Rain chances will be making a comeback in the southeastern half of Texas on Friday! Depending on the lingering sub-freezing temperatures, there’s the possibility of a winter mix in the Big Country, North Texas, and Texoma! We’ll keep our eyes peeled for that as today’s weather clears out!

A glorious, slow warmup begins on Friday, as the entire state of Texas can look forward to basking in the enjoyable warmth of temperatures soaring into the 60s, 70s, and 80s by Sunday! This weekend’s weather is shaping up to be absolutely splendid!
