Winter Storm Incoming Tonight And Ramping Up Tomorrow!

Winter weather is about to unfold across Texas, and it has been much anticipated. Overnight, light snow brought a small amount of accumulation to parts of the Panhandle and West Texas. Snow showers are expected to start moving into the Borderland, Far West Texas, and the Trans-Pecos late this afternoon and tonight.

Widespread precipitation will cover the eastern two-thirds of Texas on Thursday morning, primarily affecting the eastern half of the state on Thursday afternoon and night, before moving out of Texas by Friday morning. The rain/snow line is anticipated to set up near Interstate 20 in the Big Country, North Texas, and Northeast Texas on Thursday afternoon. As we transition to Thursday night and Friday morning, this rain/snow line may align more north to south, bringing wet snow to parts of the northern Hill Country, North Texas, and much of Northeast Texas.

A final round of snow may also develop in the Texas Panhandle, West Texas, and Northwest Texas on Thursday evening, with light accumulations possible due to colder temperatures. In the southeastern half of Texas, surface temperatures are expected to stay around or just above freezing throughout most of the event. As a result, the wet snow will have to overcome warmer surface conditions to accumulate.

We expect snowfall totals of one to five inches from the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex up through Northeast Texas. Although some models suggest the possibility of higher totals, we believe a greater melting rate will keep snow amounts in check. However, if surface temperatures are one to two degrees colder than currently forecasted, it could significantly increase potential snow totals from Thursday into Friday morning.

For the southeastern half of Texas, surface temperatures will remain safely above freezing, resulting in rain instead of snow. Beneficial, and at times heavy, rain is expected from Thursday into Friday morning, with total accumulations of one to three inches, and possibly higher, across the eastern half of the state. We predict that any severe storm potential will remain offshore in the Gulf of Mexico by Friday morning, but we will monitor the Golden Triangle area in case any unstable air moves inland.
