Texas Winter Storm To Hit Hard From This Afternoon Until Friday Morning

This morning, a winter storm is starting its journey across the western parts of Texas. We can expect some pockets of snow, sleet, and rain to move northeast, reaching areas like the Permian Basin, Concho Valley, Big Country, and into North Texas.

This is just the first round of three, and it will continue making its way northeast into the D/FW Metroplex shortly. The main event kicks off this afternoon as widespread precipitation sweeps through the eastern two-thirds of Texas, including the Panhandle and West Texas. Snowfall will likely be the star of the show in the Panhandle, West Texas, Northwest Texas, Big Country, Texoma, and parts of North Texas and Northeast Texas.

Beneficial rains are forecast across the eastern two-thirds of Texas today and tonight; with one-half inch to three inches of accumulation possible.

Thankfully, surface temperatures will stay comfortably above freezing in the southeastern half of Texas, bringing moderate to heavy rain at times today and tonight, stretching into Friday morning. A boost in snow intensity is on the way for Texoma, Northeast Texas, and North Texas, including the D/FW Metroplex, from late this afternoon through early Friday morning, with impressive accumulations (over 4 inches) possible by tonight into Friday morning. If a small band of heavier snow happens, we might see even more snow than anticipated!

Snowfall accumulations are expected today, tonight, into Friday morning across the northern third of Texas. The heaviest snows, four to eight inches, may fall from the D/FW Metroplex north/northeast toward Sherman and Paris in Texoma and Northeast Texas.

Lighter snowfall could also occur south of Interstate 20 in areas like Big Country, North Texas, and Northeast Texas. Parts of the Panhandle and West Texas might see two to five inches of snow, which is even more than we thought earlier! Travel will become slick to hazardous in those areas as the snow picks up throughout the day, especially after sunset tonight through Friday morning.

All precipitation is expected to wrap up from west to east by Friday morning, with everything cleared out of Texas by lunchtime. Road conditions should improve a bit Friday afternoon, but keep in mind that a hard freeze Friday night could turn any water, slush, or snow into ice until Saturday morning.

On a brighter note, a warming trend will kick off on Saturday, bringing 60s back to the southern half of Texas. Most areas in Texas can look forward to dry weather this weekend through early next week, though we are keeping an eye on another possible round of precipitation around Wednesday.
