Texas Weather: Nasty Hot & High Wildfire Danger

Triple-digit high temperatures with some near-records will likely cross Texas over the next few days. We’re in our hottest weather of the year, and with some cities topping out in the 110-114 degree range, it sure feels like it. We may not have the number of triple-digit days we did last year, but we’re getting a condensed version now. It’s hot, it stinks, and you don’t need me to tell you that.

High Wildfire Danger

Wildfires are becoming more problematic across Texas, and we’re now seeing 1,000+ acre fires in Northwest Texas and the Big Country. A flash drought has developed across the northwestern half of Texas. Wildfire danger is rapidly increasing, and we see new fires nearly daily. Multiple strike teams of firefighters and aviation resources have been pre-positioned to address increased initial attack activity. Any fires we get in the wildland-urban interface will potentially be problematic. Remember – it doesn’t take a large wildfire to destroy property. Last summer, the grass fire in Balch Springs destroyed over a dozen homes and was only a couple dozen acres.

Changes this weekend and next week

It will remain very hot across Texas for the remainder of the week. Temperatures in the eastern twenty percent of Texas and along the Texas Gulf Coast may trend down later this week. There is some hope that increased precipitation chances will return to the southern/southeastern third of Texas late this weekend and next week. That would knock temperatures down for those folks. Otherwise, we look to remain hot and mostly dry.
