Thunderstorms will move south across Northeast Texas and East Texas this morning into the early afternoon hours. After a brief hiatus, another round of thunderstorms is possible tonight into Wednesday morning across North Texas, Texoma, and Northeast Texas as storms move south of Oklahoma. We may also see isolated storms in the Texas Panhandle and Northwest Texas this afternoon. Of course, like many of our forecasts over the last week, we’ll see if this is a moot point by lunchtime. Once again, this will be a day where we must be on our toes and ‘nowcast.’

This morning’s cluster of storms moving south out of Oklahoma are capable of producing strong wind gusts over 50 MPH, small hail, frequent lightning, and heavy rainfall. Saturated soils mean any new rain that falls will run off, resulting in more flooding. Some damaging wind gusts over 60 MPH are possible, and saturated soils mean trees will be uprooted more easily. Trees tend to fall on things, like roads and buildings. It’s important to be aware of these risks to be mindful of downed trees, and not to approach downed powerlines. If the cluster of storms remains organized, it could move south into East Texas by late morning – perhaps making a run at the Golden Triangle. Like yesterday, we’ll have to see where any outflow boundaries end up, since they could spark off new storms later today.
Later Today through Tonight
Isolated severe storms are possible in the Texas Panhandle and Northwest Texas late this afternoon into the early evening. If these storms develop, large hail and localized damaging winds are possible. A higher chance of severe storms appears to be north of the Red River in Oklahoma later today. Like this morning, we’ll probably see the Oklahoma storms gang up and invade North Texas and Northeast Texas late tonight into Wednesday morning. Some of these storms may be severe, with damaging winds, hail, and heavy rain. The severity of these storms will depend on how the atmosphere recovers after this morning’s round of storms, underscoring the need to stay informed and prepared.
Summer Heat Has Arrived in Full Force
Outside of thunderstorm chances – which seem to be never-ending – heat and humidity will be the big weather players across Texas. Triple-digit temperatures, whether in the ‘feels like’ department or actually recorded, are expected across the state over the next several afternoons. Heat index values near 120 degrees are forecast in South Texas, with 103 to 112 degrees across the eastern half of Texas. Welcome to the summer of hell number three. A piece of good news is that a slight pattern change by the weekend could bring a ‘not as hot’ front with increased rain chances to a majority of Texas late in the weekend and early next week.
