TEXAS: Two Rounds of Severe Storms Possible Today & Tonight

Two rounds of potentially severe storms could impact the Big Country, North Texas, Texoma, Northeast Texas, and the Ark-La-Tex this afternoon and again after midnight into Thursday morning.

This afternoon’s storms may intensify in Northeast Texas and eastern North Texas. Some data suggests that these storms could produce large hail and localized damaging wind gusts. However, the environment may also support a tornado threat – though after the forecast ‘busts’ of the last few days, I’m hesitant to commit fully to that possibility.

Nevertheless, we’ll keep a close eye on trends, and if we have tornado warnings today, we’ll provide live severe weather coverage. A lull is expected late this evening through about midnight in Texas concerning severe storms.

Isolated to scattered severe storms are possible this afternoon through mid-evening in Northeast Texas, Ark-La-Tex, and eastern North Texas. All modes of severe weather may occur. A second round of severe storms is expected after midnight tonight through Thursday morning in the Big Country, North Texas, Texoma, and Northeast Texas - with very large hail and strong wind gusts the primary threat.

Severe weather outlook for Today and Tonight

After midnight and into early Thursday, scattered strong to severe storms are expected to develop south of Interstate 20 in the Big Country, North Texas, and Northeast Texas. These storms will quickly move north/northeast across Interstates 20 and 30, including the D/FW Metroplex, and into Texoma and the Ark-La-Tex by 5-7AM Thursday.

The overall tornado threat appears very low for now, but we may see the most intense storms produce very large hail (golf ball to tennis ball size) and strong wind gusts. Not all storms will be intense. Subsequently, a lull is expected from mid-morning Thursday into the early afternoon.

Multiple opportunities for strong to severe storms, along with heavy rain, are anticipated across the northern two-thirds of Texas on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. We will focus on those subsequent rounds of storms after today.

Three to seven inches of rain may lead to a flooding threat in Northeast Texas and the Ark-La-Tex on Friday and Saturday. It is also worth noting that we might see snow in the Panhandle and West Texas on Saturday.
