One more day of thunderstorm chances across parts of Texas before Mother Nature calms down and switches us to a summer-like weather pattern for several days. Get ready for triple-digit temperatures or heat-index values this weekend and for the first half of next week. The increasing heat will be problematic for those without power in portions of the Houston area.
Yesterday’s Severe Storms in Texas – My thoughts
Yesterday was a prime example of a high-precipitation supercell going bonkers over a highly populated area. Hurricane-force winds, likely well over 100 MPH, brought scenes from Hurricane Ike (2008) back to portions of Houston. Hundreds of thousands remain in the dark, and it will take several days to regain power. I suspect most of yesterday’s damage in Southeast Texas was from straight-line winds, but survey crews will likely find at least a few embedded tornado tracks.
Regardless – yesterday’s extreme wind event in Houston was just bad. The Permian Basin, Concho Valley, and West Texas also dealt with large hail and destructive winds. That doesn’t get into the heavy rain and flooding issues experienced across several regions of Texas yesterday, including Central Texas, the Brazos Valley, and the Piney Woods of East Texas. Damage will likely be in the billions, and at least four individuals have lost their lives in Houston due to the severe weather.

Today’s Storm Chances
Scattered thunderstorms are ongoing this morning in portions of South Texas. The stronger storms may throw out large hail and localized damaging winds. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible this morning and afternoon along most of the Texas Gulf Coast. Some storms may be strong, but we do not expect a repeat of yesterday’s high-end severe weather. We’ll see storm chances decrease by the late afternoon hours. That will begin a several-day period of dry weather across most of Texas.
An exception to the dry weather pattern may be isolated thunderstorms late this afternoon in the Permian Basin and Concho Valley. Far fewer storms than yesterday are expected, with overall coverage remaining isolated. Yet, any storms that do develop could be on the strong side. The same goes for late Saturday and Sunday afternoons in the eastern Texas Panhandle.
Summer Heat This Weekend
With the departure of our rain and cloud cover, the beginning of a multi-day stretch of summer-like temperatures will arrive in Texas on Saturday. Technically, it’s already been that way across southern portions of Texas – but the entire state will join in this weekend through at least Tuesday of next week. High temperatures in the afternoon hours will peak in the upper 80s, 90s, and 100s. Higher humidity across the eastern half of Texas will result in heat index values running between 98 and 108 degrees.
We could switch back into a stormier weather pattern beginning Wednesday of next week, though that isn’t guaranteed. A weak cool front and increasing cloud cover may bring another temporary respite from ‘actual summer’ arriving for the second half of next week.
