TEXAS: Severe Storms & Heavy Rain On The Way

Active weather will continue throughout the week in Texas, with multiple opportunities for thunderstorms capable of producing flooding rains, damaging winds, hail, and possibly a few tornadoes. These threats will be highest across the southern and southeastern third of Texas later today, Thursday, and into the first half of Friday.

After an unpleasant evening filled with hail reports in North Texas, we are experiencing a lull this morning across Texas. That will change this afternoon as thunderstorms develop over the Big Bend, Edwards Plateau, Rio Grande Plains, and South Texas. Multiple rounds of storms are expected to form and move through these regions over the next two days.

Forecast rain totals over the next three days across Texas. We're expecting the heaviest rains (one to three inches) across the southeastern half of the state. Five to twelve inches of rain may locally fall across South Texas, Coastal Bend, and the Coastal Plains with at least localized flooding.

Thanks to a continuous flow of moisture coming in from the Gulf and a slow-moving upper-level storm system, the atmosphere will remain energized. Some storms may produce damaging winds, hail, and potentially a few tornadoes—especially on Thursday. Five to twelve inches of rain are possible in the Rio Grande Valley, Rio Grande Plains, South Texas, Coastal Bend, and Coastal Plains, with some heavier rain risk potentially extending north into South-Central Texas (the San Antonio region).

Rain is also expected at times tonight through Friday morning across the eastern two-thirds of Texas, with some beneficial rain totals anticipated. Thunderstorm chances will decrease from west to east Friday afternoon and evening, leaving much of Texas dry Friday night through Sunday morning.

Storm threat returns on Sunday

Severe storms are possible on Sunday as a cool front moves across North Texas, Northeast Texas, Brazos Valley, and Southeast Texas.

Another system will bring a cool front south into Texas on Sunday. Scattered thunderstorms are possible Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening across the eastern third of Texas. There is potential for some of those storms to be severe, with a risk of large hail and localized damaging wind gusts.

Next week is looking active as well. We will handle the extended range forecast once we get past the next few days.
