Texas Severe Storm Warning: Threat Level Rising Today

Our calm stretch of weather has ended in Texas with the return of severe storms on Friday, affecting the Hill Country and North Texas. Today’s storms are expected to be more numerous and potentially more intense, with risks including hurricane-force wind gusts, a few tornadoes, and hail up to the size of softballs.

A conditional risk of intense storms will also exist on Sunday, and another busy severe weather day is anticipated on Monday across the northern parts of the state.

Severe storms are expected today from 1 PM through Midnight from the Concho Valley, Big Country, east across Texoma, North Texas, and Northeast Texas. All modes of severe weather are possible.

The severe weather threat today will begin earlier in the day, likely just after lunchtime, particularly in parts of the Concho Valley, Big Country, and western North Texas.

Several severe storms are projected to erupt between 1PM and 3PM, resulting in a complex storm mode that may lead to an organizing cluster of severe storms moving east toward the D/FW Metroplex and Interstate 35 by late afternoon.

The most intense storms might produce very large hail, damaging hurricane-force wind gusts, and a few tornadoes. Stronger low-level wind shear compared to yesterday will be partially offset by a messier storm mode.

However, we can expect more than the single tornado warning we experienced yesterday in Texas. Extreme amounts of instability will encourage very strong winds to mix down, with wind gusts possibly reaching 80 mph out of the most intense storms.

Baseball to softball-sized hail is anticipated with the most intense, discrete storms, alongside a tornado risk which may accompany these storms or occur on the leading edge of any intense line segments.

Storms will continue moving east into Northeast and East Texas this evening before weakening around midnight. Multiple rounds of storms may occur, so we need to remain vigilant in North Texas.
