The rain has ended, and a strong cold front is set to arrive in Texas later today and continue into Wednesday. Tonight, temperatures will drop into the 20s in the Panhandle and West Texas, with wind chills falling into the 10s. While the cold front won’t bring this chill to the rest of Texas on Wednesday, we anticipate a cool start on Thursday. By Thursday morning, temperatures will be in the 20s and 30s across the northern three-quarters of Texas, while urban heat islands may remain in the lower 40s. A frost or freeze may occur in more sheltered areas and locations that typically trend cooler. Along the Texas Gulf Coast and in South Texas, we expect temperatures in the 40s. Although these temperatures might feel shocking given the warm fall, they are not unusual for late November.
A dry airmass will support effective daytime heating, allowing temperatures to rebound into the 50s, 60s, and 70s across Texas on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. This weekend and into the first half of next week, we should see a warm-up that brings above-average temperatures back to the region. Unfortunately, no rain is expected across Texas until sometime next week, which will increase the wildfire danger, especially in areas where freezing temperatures have caused vegetation to go dormant.
