A strong cold front has finally brought fall weather to Texas. The front still has to push into the southern third of Texas and will do so later today. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected along the lower Texas Gulf Coast, Rio Grande Valley, and Deep South Texas this afternoon and again on Thursday. Heavy rain is possible locally, with one to two inches of accumulation. Rain will also be possible Thursday night in Far West Texas in the Borderland (El Paso region).

High temperatures this afternoon will be twenty to thirty degrees lower across the state compared to this past weekend. The northern two-thirds of Texas will top out in the 60s to lower 70s, with 70s and 80s across the south. Tonight will be comparatively chilly, with upper 30s and 40s along and north of Interstate 10. That won’t be cold come winter, but with most of us acclimated to summer, it’ll feel chilly by morning.
High temperatures will remain pleasant for mid-October as we round out the work week. A slow warming trend will commence beginning Friday, with above-average temperatures returning to Texas early next week.
Stormy Weather Sets up for the Panhandle This Weekend
Multiple rounds of rain are likely this weekend across the Texas Panhandle and West Texas. Heavy rain and a few strong thunderstorms are also in the mix. Two to three inches of rain may fall across the western half of the Texas Panhandle, with one-quarter to three-quarters of an inch of rain possible in West Texas. Unfortunately, rain chances are unlikely to spread farther east – with most of Texas remaining dry over the next five days. Even with cooler temperatures, the wildfire risk is now very high across Texas.
