Tropical Storm Gordon has formed in the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

Data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration suggests that heating a home is more costly for consumers than cooling the same property during the warm season. A heating degree day (HDD) is calculated by determining how many degrees the temperature drops below 65 °F. For example, a day with an average temperature of 50 °F is considered to have 15 HDDs. A cooling degree day (CDD) measures how much the average temperature is above 65 °F. For instance, a day with an average temperature of 77 °F is considered to have 12 CDDs.

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring an area of disturbed weather off the coast of the Southeast that has a low chance of developing over the next week. Conditions are not favorable for rapid tropical development, but the amount of development will not affect impacts along the mid-Atlantic.

A raging wildfire that has burned thousands of acres in Southern California has added a web camera to its list of structures destroyed in the blaze.

Since 2000, 13 hurricanes have made direct landfall on the Pelican State. Cyclones include Hurricane Katrina, which struck the New Orleans area as a Category 3, and Hurricane Laura, which made landfall in the western part of the state as a Category 4 in 2020.

Many residents of Kenner, Louisiana, are reeling after Hurricane Francine brought torrential rains and floods that destroyed their homes and vehicles.

Tropical Depression Nine formed on Thursday and organized enough to become a tropical storm. Landfall is expected to happen near Cabo San Lucas along Mexico’s Baja California. Tropical Storm Warnings and Watches are in effect for the province ahead impacts.

Charged particles crashing into Earth created strong solar storm conditions on Thursday, and a Geomagnetic Storm Watch continues through at least Friday for a renewed chance of seeing the Northern Lights.
