Stormy Weather Pattern for Texas Next Week?

Popup showers and thunderstorms will remain a possibility across the southeastern half of Texas this afternoon and through the weekend. We’ll probably see some storms in western parts of the state by early next week, too! Anything that can provide a reprieve from our summer doldrums and heat is welcome… unless it’s a hurricane.

No Tropical Mischief Headed Toward Texas

The good news is that we will not deal with tropical blobs or mischief for the foreseeable future (about ten days), which should provide some reassurance and peace of mind. That doesn’t change the fact that millions remain without power across Southeast and East Texas. As we enter another summer day, we must remember that many try to get by without air conditioning. Hopefully, popup afternoon showers and storms will bring some relief from the heat today.

Heat Relief or Bust!

Any popup thunderstorm across Texas over the next several days will likely produce localized downpours, brief street flooding, gusty winds, and lightning. While potentially hazardous to those outdoors, these storms also bring a much-needed break from the summer heat. Sudden gusty winds and lightning will be a hazard from popup storms to those on lakes this weekend. Otherwise, afternoon high temperatures across Texas will range from the upper 80s to the lower 100s into the first half of next week.

Wet Weather Next Week?

The Climate Prediction Center is forecasting an above-average chance for a wetter weather pattern in the July 17-21 timeframe for Texas.

Longer-range weather model data suggest we may enter a more active weather pattern for the second half of next week. The upper-level heat dome would be relegated to the Pacific Northwest and open Atlantic. We would be in-between and may be able to get lucky enough to get into more of a stormy pattern. Even if not, we may have improved chances for scattered storms continuing into late next week. Hopefully, we can squeeze out more rain across parts of the state that need it!
