Stormy Labor Day Weekend Expected for Texas

Unsettled and generally active weather is expected across Texas this Labor Day weekend and the upcoming week. Daily chances for thunderstorms will provide multiple benefits, including much-needed rainfall and lower high temperatures. Widespread severe weather—tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds—is not expected. Localized flooding, especially early next week, will be a possibility across several regions of the state.

We anticipate extended periods of drier weather, and no one specific day is likely to be a washout for most folks. Having a backup wouldn’t be a bad idea for those with outdoor plans this weekend. However, I’m hopeful most will be able to enjoy their Labor Day plans. Remember, if thunder roars, go indoors.

Nearly all of Texas should receive some rain over the upcoming five day stretch. Several inches of rain may fall acrsos the western half of Texas, and along the Middle and Upper Texas Gulf Coast.

Thanks to a slow-moving cool front sticking around into early next week, we anticipate the daily ‘popup thunderstorm’ chances will continue. These hit-and-miss storms are typically diurnally driven and not remarkably different than those you might expect to see if you spent a summer afternoon in Florida. They’ll produce locally heavy rainfall, but typically only rain on any given location for an hour or two. Monday may feature a more widespread chance of rain across the western half of Texas.

Next Week & Stormy First Week of September

Below-average temperatures may continue through the first week of September across Texas and the eastern United States.

Our unsettled weather pattern may continue through the first week of September across Texas.

With multiple days of rain chances and our weak, cool front, temperatures across all of Texas will be coming down. High temperatures across most of the state will drop into the 70s and 80s this weekend, especially early next week from Monday onward. Afternoon temperatures in the lower 90s are expected along the Texas Gulf Coast and South Texas.

We’re not at risk of tropical mischief in Texas over the next seven days. We will need to monitor a tropical system in the Caribbean in about a week. It remains to be seen where that system will end up, but we’ll keep an eye on it.
