Stay Alert: East Texas Bracing For Severe Storms 10 Am-5 Pm

Isolated to scattered storms may develop after 7 AM along the Upper Texas Gulf Coast, the Golden Triangle, and East Texas. We need to monitor these storms for any potential severe weather, but hopefully, they will remain manageable. The main activity is expected to begin after 9 AM, possibly closer to 11 AM, with an increase in showers and storms across the eastern third of Texas.

Isolated, semi-discrete supercell storms may develop in East Texas. These individual storms will be in an environment supportive of various severe weather modes, including large hail, damaging winds, and a risk of tornadoes. While it is uncertain whether they will fully utilize this potential, the threat is still present.

Tornado risk map for Texas on December 28, 2024. There is a low to medium threat of tornadoes across Northeast Texas, East Texas, and Far Southeast Texas from 10 AM through 5 PM.

These storms will move east and northeast and continue to develop through the mid-afternoon hours. Additionally, a line of storms is likely to intensify east of Interstate 35 in eastern North Texas around or shortly after lunchtime. Those storms could be strong to severe, bringing damaging winds, large hail, and potential spin-up tornadoes. The highest threat for tornadoes will be across Deep East Texas, the Piney Woods of East Texas, and the Toledo Bend Reservoir.

As we experienced yesterday, this activity will move from west to east and should exit Texas around 5 p.m. today. Later today and tonight, a tornado outbreak is possible across Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Texas may serve as the ‘starting gate’ for this severe weather, and as storms approach Louisiana, we will need to monitor them closely for increasing severe weather and tornado potential.

We will begin live coverage on this website, mobile app, and Texas Weather Center YouTube channel at 11 AM or sooner if necessary. We will remain with you until the storms have completely exited Texas to the east.
