Snowstorm Alert: Threat Growing For Early Next Week

An extended period of extremely cold weather is expected to impact Texas from this weekend through much of next week. Freezing temperatures are likely to occur nightly starting Sunday statewide, with the exception of the Rio Grande Valley. Some areas may experience temperatures dropping to near zero, as well as in the single digits and teens. The northern half of Texas may not see temperatures rise above freezing for several days starting Monday. It’s going to be very cold, so please remember to take care of people, pets, pipes, and plants.

In terms of winter weather, we are monitoring two potential systems. The first system may bring light snow to the Texas Panhandle Saturday night. Although accumulations are not expected to be significant, the western Panhandle could see a dusting to about one inch of snow. For the rest of Texas, the weather will be cold but dry this weekend.

The second chance for winter weather seems to be increasing from Monday evening into Tuesday across the southeastern half of Texas, excluding Deep South Texas. There is a possibility of snow, freezing rain, and sleet. Overall, both precipitation chances and totals are trending upward. Although we are still several days out, the prospects for a potentially disruptive winter weather event are growing for Monday evening (possibly as early as Monday afternoon) in parts of South-Central Texas, Brazos Valley, Coastal Plains, Southeast Texas, the Golden Triangle, and East Texas. This could also include portions of Central Texas, South Texas, the Coastal Bend, and southern North Texas.

Snow accumulations are possible, along with light ice accumulations. It’s important to note that we are not expecting a significant ice storm; however, even light ice could lead to hazardous conditions on bridges, overpasses, and some roads. Depending on the amount of snow, we may also encounter slushy or snow-packed roads. We will continue to refine the forecast as we progress through the weekend. This system is expected to move out by Tuesday afternoon, and travel conditions may improve somewhat on Tuesday afternoon. However, low temperatures will drop well below freezing Tuesday night across most, if not all, of Texas. Any slush, water, or snow is likely to freeze into a block of ice shortly after sunset on Tuesday.
