Get Ready To Feel The Heat: Texas Weather About To Sizzle

Torrential rain is impacting parts of the Southeast Texas Gulf Coast this morning. In the past few hours, nearly eight inches of rain has fallen in Dickinson, just south of Houston, toward Galveston County. There is considerable street flooding, and all the water will take a while to drain. We almost had a waterspout/tornado issue near Baytown before 3 AM, too.

Scattered showers and storms will continue today across the southeastern third of Texas. That includes the entire Texas Gulf Coast, the Rio Grande Valley, the Coastal Bend, the Coastal Plains, Southeast Texas, and East Texas. We may even see a few storms in Central Texas, the Brazos Valley, and Ark-La-Tex.

Forecast rain totals through the weekend have an additional one-half to two inches of rain in East Texas, the Brazos Valley, Southeast Texas, and Coastal Bend.

A brief lull is expected this evening, but another round of rain will likely occur on Saturday in those regions. Saturday night into Sunday afternoon will likely be the final round of widespread rainfall. An additional one to two inches of rain may fall by Sunday across parts of Central Texas, South-Central Texas, Brazos Valley, Ark-La-Tex, Northeast Texas, East Texas, Southeast Texas, Coastal Plains, Coastal Bend, South Texas, and the Rio Grande Valley. Locally higher amounts of up to five inches can’t be ruled out, especially along the Gulf Coast.

Isolated severe storms with gusty winds and perhaps a brief tornado can’t be entirely ruled out, but the primary hazard will remain lightning and heavy rain.

Next Week looks Hot!

Tuesday's high temperature forecast brings triple digit heat to the northwestern half of Texas; while higher humidity will result in heat index temperatures of 103 to 112 degrees for the eastern half of Texas.

The northwestern half of Texas has already returned to a typical summer-time weather pattern, which’ll continue to establish itself as we make it through the weekend. High temperatures will top out in the 90s to low 100s. Next week will mark a return to summer for all of Texas, with above-average temperatures probable. That means we’ll see a return of high temperatures and heat index values above 100-110 degrees. Rain chances will also diminish, though we may not entirely shut off the faucet.

The Atlantic Basin is showing signs of becoming more active in about a week, and we’ll have to watch any systems that try to organize. We do not expect any tropical mischief issues in Texas over the next seven days.
