Get Ready Texas! Snow And Ice On The Way Tomorrow!

A whole bunch of winter storm alerts are popping up for the northwestern part of Texas as we’re expecting a mix of snow, ice, and rain to make its way across the state starting Thursday and continuing through Friday morning.

The first round will kick off Thursday morning, bringing scattered pockets of freezing rain, sleet, and snow across the northwestern region. While most people won’t notice much from this initial round, those who find themselves in the path of a sleet or freezing rain storm might see icy conditions develop quite quickly.

Our rain/snow line will shift north toward Interstate 20 on Thursday afternoon, with wet snow persisting over the Big Country, Texoma, parts of North Texas including the D/FW Metroplex, and Northeast Texas. Meanwhile, rain, heavy at times, will continue to pour down across the southeastern and eastern parts of Texas.

Winter weather alerts are in place late tonight through Friday morning for the northwestern half of Texas due to the chance of accumulating snow and ice. Travel may become difficult at times.

Updated Snow Accumulation Forecast

An exciting change in the forecast is that rain will transition back to snow for areas in the Hill Country, Central Texas, northern Brazos Valley, and northern East Texas Thursday night and Friday morning as colder air swoops in, bringing an end to precipitation from west to east. We’re looking at the heaviest snow accumulations, ranging from two to six inches, from the northern D/FW Metroplex stretching into eastern Texoma and Northeast Texas.

Folks in D/FW and Northeast Texas might notice a stark snow gradient – transitioning from little accumulation to several inches over a short distance. Just a one to two degree difference in temperatures on Thursday can significantly change the forecast; any warmer, and the rain/snow line will move north, while cooler temperatures could lead to even more snow piling up across parts of Texas.

The storm system causing this late week weather fun will move out of Texas around sunrise Friday, leading to much cooler temperatures afterward and freezing temperatures Friday night for nearly everyone in Texas. If you experience any travel disruptions tomorrow or Friday morning, things should start to clear up by Friday afternoon, but any lingering water or snow on the ground Friday evening will freeze overnight into Saturday morning as temperatures dip into the teens and twenties.
