Get Ready For A Weather Rollercoaster: Active Weekend And Chilly Times Ahead!

The new year is off to a calm start, but get ready for some exciting weather this weekend in Texas! We’ll see some gusty winds and chances for thunderstorms, along with an arctic cold front making its way in next week. For tonight, light rain will continue across the Rio Grande Valley and Texas Gulf Coast due to a weak coastal low pressure system. Plus, dense fog is likely to settle in the southern half of Texas tonight, but it should lift by late Friday morning. Enjoy the warm temperatures while you can because winter is on its way!

A strong upper-level storm system will start to bring changes to Texas beginning Saturday, especially on Sunday. We might see a few strong to severe thunderstorms late Sunday morning through the afternoon in East Texas and the Golden Triangle. The primary concern will be damaging winds from fast-moving storms, and there’s a small chance of a spin-up tornado too. We’ll keep updating the forecast as we get closer to Sunday. Also, expect strong northwest winds and much cooler temperatures to sweep through Texas on Sunday and Monday, kicking off a longer stretch of chilly weather not just for Texas but for the eastern two-thirds of the U.S. next week.

An arctic outbreak is on the way, bringing colder temperatures to the eastern half of the country. While the coldest air mass will mainly pass east of Texas, we’ll still feel a taste of winter. It might feel like January with high temperatures in the 40s and even some 30s in the north, plus several nights below freezing for most of Texas. The northern half could see lows in the teens and twenties. While it’s definitely going to be cold, we’re not expecting any of those extreme sub-zero temperatures that some of us remember from historic cold spells!

Also, there’s about a 40% chance of an upper-level storm system moving across the southern half of Texas next Wednesday and Thursday. If that happens and the cold air is already in place, we might see some wintery precipitation. However, this is still a bit of a long shot at the moment. Keep your fingers crossed, and we’ll make sure to keep all you snow lovers updated if there’s any reason to celebrate as we head into next week!
