Cold Front & Rain Chances for Texas; Future Hurricane Helene heading toward Florida

A cold front has brought fall weather and thunderstorms to parts of Texas overnight. The northwestern half of Texas has reached ‘fall’ status, with temperatures down into the 40s, 50s, and lower 60s this morning. High temperatures this afternoon will top out in the 70s to lower 80s. I’m afraid the cold front will only make it another 75 to 100 miles southeast today, leaving the southeastern half of Texas in summer weather.

Rain chances today, Tuesday, into Wednesday will bring an additional one-quarter to one inch of rain to parts of Northwest Texas, Big Country, Concho Valley, Hill Country, North Texas, Texoma, Northeast Texas, Central Texas, Brazos Valley, East Texas, and Southeast Texas.

Scattered showers and storms will remain possible near the front. A reinforcing cool front will arrive Tuesday night and Wednesday, with another chance of showers and storms. That’ll keep the cooler weather in place for the northern half to the north of two-thirds of Texas for Wednesday and Thursday.

Soon-to-be Hurricane Helene a Gulf of Mexico Threat

Helene is expected to form in the Caribbean later today; and rapidly tensify into a hurricane as it moves across the eastern Gulf of Mexico, with a Florida landfall on Thursday.

Besides the chances of rain and cooler weather, the week’s big weather story will be a hurricane moving into the eastern Gulf of Mexico. A developing tropical cyclone in the western Caribbean will likely become Helene tonight or on Tuesday as it moves into the southern Gulf of Mexico. Unfortunately, conditions are expected to favor rapid, significant intensification in a hurricane. What may become a major hurricane helene, will likely land on the Gulf-facing Florida coast Thursday afternoon.

The National Hurricane Center will begin issuing forecasts later this morning or afternoon, but this can potentially be a dangerous, high-impact hurricane for the eastern Gulf of Mexico. No impacts are expected from Helene in Texas.
