Tropical Storm Francine has formed in the Gulf of Mexico, and millions of people along parts of the U.S. Gulf Coast from Texas to Louisiana are bracing for a potentially life-threatening hurricane strike this week.

The developing storm in the southern Gulf of Mexico is currently expected to intensify as it moves toward the East Texas or Louisiana coast. The system is forecast to be at hurricane strength at landfall.

Energized particles sent blasting from the Sun over the weekend are forecast to arrive within Earth’s atmosphere by Tuesday, bringing with them the potential to see the Northern Lights.

As the Gulf Coast states prepare for impacts from Potential Tropical Cyclone Six, which is now spinning in the Gulf of Mexico, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) continues to track two more areas in the Atlantic that could become the next named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.

A series of earthquakes rattled Southern California on Saturday. The greatest was a magnitude-3.9 that was centered east of Los Angeles near the town of Ontario. Shaking was possibly felt in Los Angeles and other communities in Orange and San Diego counties.
