Looking at the 30 years from 1991 to 2020, the average development date for the first named storm in the Atlantic, the Caribbean Sea or the Gulf of Mexico is in the third week of June. It looks like Mother Nature might be getting organized right on schedule.

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a tropical disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico that could develop into a tropical depression or tropical storm this week, and while the system is expected to stay south of the U.S., fears are growing that tropical moisture being pulled north could lead to flash flooding along the Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi coasts.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center have flagged a new area to watch for potential tropical development in the southwestern Atlantic near the Bahamas this week.

A stout ridge will develop over the Ohio and Northeast in the coming days. The FOX Forecast Center expects a widespread swath of 90-to-95-degree temperatures, with a few communities reaching 100 degrees through the workweek.

CALE FIRE said a kite surfer was rescued off a beach north of Santa Cruz after becoming stranded. He used rocks to spell the word “HELP” and was eventually spotted by a private helicopter company. Firefighters eventually hoisted the man to safety on a nearby cliff.
