Extreme Fire Risk Before Major Texas Cold Front

It’s shaping up to be another dangerous day for wildfire potential, as strong winds and low humidity blanket the western half of Texas. Wind gusts exceeding 55 miles per hour are possible in the Panhandle, West Texas, and Permian Basin today, and a strong cold front will bring a northerly wind shift tonight.

We anticipate that winds will strengthen tonight into Wednesday morning as the front moves south, so wildfires may continue to spread rapidly well into the evening hours. The cold front will sweep south across all of Texas on Wednesday, lowering temperatures by 20 to 30 degrees. High temperatures across Texas on Thursday will be in the 60s and 70s, a stark contrast to the 80s, 90s, and low 100s we’ve experienced over the last several days (and today, for that matter).

The only rain chances in the seven-day forecast will occur on Sunday as a cold front descends southward across Texas. Scattered storms are possible in North Texas, Central Texas, Northeast Texas, and East Texas. Some of these storms may produce large hail and strong wind gusts. Otherwise, the remainder of Texas will continue a precipitation-free streak as we approach the end of March. Wildfire danger will remain extremely high across much of Texas in the coming days.
