Hail Storm Risk Increasing Overnight

The risk of strong thunderstorms, some producing large hail, is increasing after 2 AM Saturday. The risk for stronger storms will be relatively highest across the Big Country, eastern Concho Valley, and into North Texas. Some storms may produce large hail up to the size of golf balls (1.75″ in diameter). Most storms will not produce hail nearly that large late tonight. Frequent lightning and brief heavy rain are likely. Storms will move east/northeast.

Isolated severe storms are possible late tonight through Saturday afternoon in Texoma, north Texas, Northeast Texas, East Texas, and Southeast Texas.

We’ll see the chances for strong thunderstorms decrease after sunrise as upper-level lift temporarily decreases. Showers and a few storms will continue across Northwest Texas, Big Country, Texoma, North Texas, and the Ark-La-Tex tomorrow morning and afternoon. Some storms may produce pocket-change size hail.

In the afternoon hours, we may see a modest increase in stronger storm potential across the Piney Woods of East Texas, Toledo Bend Reservoir, and south into the Golden Triangle in Far Southeast Texas. Some storms may produce large hail, localized damaging winds, and a very low chance of a tornado.

On the flip side of the system, bands of heavy snow are expected in the Texas Panhandle for much of Saturday. While the overall Panhandle should see between one-half to two inches of wet snow, those smaller, heavier bands may produce localized maximums of 6-8 inches. Travel difficulties are likely in the Texas Panhandle on Saturday due to snow-covered, slick roads and reduced visibility. Precipitation chances will end in Texas Sunday morning, with beautiful weather expected Sunday afternoon through Tuesday statewide.
