A once-in-a-blue-moon winter storm is bringing rare snow to the United States Gulf Coast today. From Corpus Christi, Galveston, Houston, and Beaumont to New Orleans, Mobile, Panama City Beach, and Tallahassee, today may indeed be a once-in-a-generation event. The system has departed Texas to the east, but we’ll have to watch for slick and icy roads nightly as temperatures plummet below freezing and refreeze any snowmelt.
We’ll begin a climb up the temperature rollercoaster on Wednesday as we quickly start to melt any snow cover and return to a sense of normalcy, weather-wise, across Texas. We’ll still have cold nights with most of the state below freezing through the end of the work week, but daytime temperatures will rebound nicely under mostly sunny skies. Outside of a few showers on the Lower Texas Gulf Coast, we anticipate mostly dry weather through Friday across the state.

Our next storm system will begin introducing rain chances to the state this weekend. Much warmer air will be in place for this system across the eastern two-thirds of Texas, so no winter mischief worries there. On the opposite side of the weather spectrum, we’ll have to keep an eye out for a few thunderstorms Sunday afternoon in East Texas. We may see precipitation chances continue into early next week as a strong cold front arrives, so the chance for some winter mix is not zero in parts of the Panhandle and West Texas. We’re not seeing anything that suggests a major winter weather event at this point, but we’ll keep an eye on it.
