An arctic outbreak is expected to bring an extended period of very cold temperatures and the chance for winter precipitation next week. We will experience a temperature roller-coaster, peaking on Friday with highs in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Enjoy the warmth, as Friday will be the warmest day most of Texas will see for a long time.
A strong arctic cold front will push south through Texas starting Friday evening, reaching nearly all areas by Saturday. Behind the cold front, a very cold air mass will move in, accompanied by gusty north winds and a significant drop in temperatures.

Cold weather will persist for much of the upcoming week. All of Texas, except for the Rio Grande Valley, is expected to drop below freezing each night from Saturday through the following week. The Panhandle may see temperatures fall below zero, while the northern two-thirds of Texas is expected to experience temperatures in the teens. Between Monday and Wednesday, the northern half of Texas may not rise above freezing.
Light snow is possible Saturday evening through Sunday morning in the Panhandle, with minor accumulations possible. Winter weather—including snow, freezing rain, and sleet—may affect parts of Texas from Monday evening through Wednesday. Although total accumulations are expected to be light, most of Texas will experience sub-freezing temperatures at various times, necessitating close monitoring. Even minor accumulations of ice or snow could lead to travel difficulties. We will keep a close eye on these conditions as we approach the weekend.
