Christmas Eve Storms Are On The Way to Texas!

Active weather is expected later today, tonight, and the day after Christmas, which are our primary forecast concerns for this Texas Weather Roundup. Today and Thursday feature a chance of thunderstorms, some of which could be strong or severe. Pocket-change-sized hail, localized damaging wind gusts, heavy rain, and a brief tornado are possible on both days. We want to emphasize that these storm chances do not appear nearly as potent as those experienced on December 26, 2015, in North Texas. However, if a brief tornado or damaging wind gust affects your area in the coming days, it will undoubtedly be significant for you.

This morning, the Panhandle, Northwest Texas, and Texoma are experiencing dreary, foggy conditions expected to continue into Christmas. Showers and a few storms are likely across the eastern half of Texas this morning. By early afternoon, chances of thunderstorms will increase near a cold front in Texoma, North Texas, and Northeast Texas. Additional storms are also probable in East Texas, away from the front this afternoon.

Isolated severe storms are possible this afternoon through early Wednesday morning across the eastern half of Texas as a cool front moves south.

This evening, a line of storms will develop along the southward-moving front from Central Texas through North Texas and Northeast Texas. Late this evening, this line will move south across Central Texas, the Brazos Valley, and East Texas. Those in the Brazos Valley, Southeast Texas, Golden Triangle, and Coastal Plains will likely see this line move in from the north early Wednesday morning, off the coast, and into the Gulf of Mexico by sunrise Wednesday.

Some storms this afternoon, evening, and overnight could be strong to severe. They will feature localized damaging wind gusts, pocket-change-sized hail, and a very low tornado risk. Heavy rain and lightning are expected.

Most of Christmas Day will experience low-impact weather across Texas after the storms move out, although fog and clouds may persist in the northern half and the eastern third of the state. Another round of storms is likely on Thursday afternoon and evening across the eastern third of Texas, with some possibly strong to severe. We’ll address Thursday’s weather once we get through today.

We’ll do our best to update you on today’s weather as we progress through Christmas Eve. We wish you safe travel and encourage you to watch the sky if severe weather approaches your area.
