Texas Weather Gets Cold Tonight; First Look at Thanksgiving Weather

A strong cold front will bring an autumn chill to Texas tonight. Temperatures have fallen into the 20s this morning across the Texas Panhandle and West Texas. A cold front will continue moving south through the state today with north winds. This isn’t a classic crashy the cold front where temperatures fall faster than lake levels in a summer drought. No rain, snow, or lofted igloos are expected, either. It will be more relaxed, but the chill arrives tonight as winds settle down and the dry, clear airmass allows for excellent radiational cooling.

A temperature map for Texas showcasing cold weather expected tonight into Thursday morning. Temperatures will fall into the 20s, 30s, and 40s.

Temperatures tonight into Thursday morning will fall into the 30s across the northern four-fifths of Texas. An exception will be the Panhandle, where we may see 20s again, and urban heat islands that may stay in the lower 40s. Temperatures down into the 40s to near 50 degrees are expected along the Texas Gulf Coast, South Texas, and the Rio Grande Valley.

A dry airmass cools quickly after sunset but warms efficiently during the daylight hours. Tomorrow and Friday will be an example of that heating ability as temperatures rebound twenty-five to thirty-five degrees. High temperatures will top out in the 70s across the southern half of Texas, with 50s and 60s in the north. A warming trend will commence Friday, with high temperatures across Texas returning to the 70s, 80s, and even low 90s this weekend and into early next week.

Early Look: Active Weather for Thanksgiving?

Little to no rain is forecast across Texas and surrounding states through Tuesday of next week. Active weather may begin just before Thanksgiving Day.

Our next chance of showers and storms looks to be around Wednesday of next week. A significant pattern shift is expected across the United States. While we’re still looking into weather-model fantasy land, a dynamic system may bring inclement weather to the eastern half of the United States during the Wednesday-Friday timeframe next week – including Thanksgiving Day. I only mention it this far out because of travel plans and the holiday. A cold front will probably be pushed into Texas on Thanksgiving or after that. We’ll fine-tune the forecast as we get closer. I promise you we don’t want to deal with a temper tantrum next week from Mother Nature any more than Y’all do.
