Texas Weather Roundup: Storm Chances Shift East Today

A line of showers and embedded thunderstorms will move east across the eastern half of Texas this morning through the mid-afternoon hours. There remains a risk of isolated damaging wind gusts and brief tornadoes. The severe weather threat will decrease, but not wholly end, once storms make it east of Interstate 35 later this morning in North and Central Texas. We expect the line of storms to become less organized due to a more stable airmass east of I-35 across the eastern third of Texas.

Scattered showers and storms will remain possible this morning through the mid-afternoon until the line moves into Arkansas and Louisiana after lunchtime. Rain will continue in the Texas Panhandle and West Texas until lunchtime today. Skies will quickly clear as gusty west winds envelop Texas this afternoon. Rain chances will conclude in Texas by the late afternoon, and we’ll begin another extended stretch of dry weather.

A stronger cold front will bring northerly winds to Texas on Tuesday and Wednesday. A hard freeze is expected Wednesday morning in the Panhandle and West Texas, with temperatures down into the 20s. Thursday morning will bring temperatures in the 30s to the northern two-thirds of Texas, especially in valleys and sheltered regions. A modest freeze may occur for some folks, but we’re not discussing an arctic doom outbreak. Temperatures Wednesday and Thursday afternoons will climb into the 50s, 60s, and 70s across Texas.

Above-average afternoon temperatures will return to Texas by Friday, with warm weather continuing through the weekend and next week. The faucet will be shut off, with maybe some hope of rain back in Texas a week from tomorrow. Those who haven’t received beneficial rains recently will have to deal with very high wildfire danger this week, and for those who end up having a freeze, surface fuels will go dormant – resulting in an uptick in wildfire danger even if you have received rain recently.
