Strong Storms Tonight in northern Texas with Cold Front’s Arrival

Thunderstorm chances return to Texas tonight and will become a near-daily feature of our forecasts as we continue into the first week of November. Our arid weather pattern is finally coming to an end.

Today will feature another round of record high temperatures for late October across the eastern seventy-five percent of Texas. Likewise, very high wildfire danger is again expected across most of the state. Gusty winds and drought-cured fuels will allow for fast-moving grass fires.
A cold front will move across the northwestern/western third of Texas by this afternoon. Temperatures will be comparatively cooler, with north winds behind the front. We’re not expecting a crashy-the-cold-front situation, but it’ll feel more like late October. East of the cold front, well – it’s still warm and increasingly humid. Spotty light showers are likely again this morning for the eastern half of Texas.

Severe Storms Possible After Dark

Strong to severe storms are possible after 8 PM today through pre-dawn Thursday in Texoma, North Texas, Northeast Texas, Ark-La-Tex, and to a lesser extent into the eastern Big Country, Hill Country, and Central Texas. Hail and strong wind gusts are the primary threat from stronger storms; but a tornado can't be ruled out.

As we head past sunset and into this evening, we anticipate a line of thunderstorms to develop from Kansas, Oklahoma, and eventually south into Texoma, North Texas, and eastern Big County along the cold front’s leading edge. These storms will progress east/southeast late tonight into Thursday morning across the regions mentioned above and into the Ark-La-Tex, Northeast Texas, the Hill Country, and Central Texas. Some storms may be strong to severe with quarter-size hail, localized damaging wind gusts, and brief heavy rain. A tornado can’t be completely ruled out, especially near the Red River and north into Oklahoma. Scattered showers and storms will develop ahead of the cold front across the eastern third of Texas during Thursday’s morning hours.

Thursday’s Weather & Outdoor Event Planning

As the cold front slowly moves south Thursday, it’ll make it through the northern two-thirds of Texas, bringing drier air and decent outdoor weather. The southern third of Texas will experience isolated to scattered showers and storms Thursday afternoon and Thursday evening, though it won’t be a complete washout for all locations. Nevertheless, if thunder roars, you better get those trick-or-treaters indoors. We don’t need any Frankenstein incidents tomorrow night. The overall severe thunderstorm threat on Thursday will be limited.

More Rain This Weekend & Early Next Week

Unsettled weather will return to the northwestern half of Texas on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with multiple rounds of thunderstorms expected. We need the rain, which could bring beneficial rains with multiple rounds over a few days. A few strong storms may occur, and we’ll dive into the weekend round of storms once we get past tonight. Active weather will continue next week, with a stronger cold front bringing thunderstorm chances to the eastern half to eastern two-thirds of Texas, beginning Monday and slowly moving east as we get into Tuesday and Wednesday.
