Unlike the previous two summers of intense heat, it looks like we’ll get a welcome relief later this week into the weekend. A rather pleasant weather pattern change is going to bring cooler weather (for July, come on now) and higher rain chances to Texas. This doesn’t look to be a short-duration event, either. We could see the cooler weather and higher rain chances continue into next week, providing a prolonged break from the usual summer heat! High temperatures in the 80s are on the way for a majority of the state at times over the next week!
Today will not be one of the cooler days. High temperatures this afternoon will top out in the 90s to near 105 degrees, including in our larger population centers. It will not be pleasant and downright dangerous for those without power a week after Beryl’s arrival on the Texas Coast.

Scattered thunderstorms will move into the Texas Panhandle from Colorado and New Mexico this evening.
Some storms will be strong to severe with damaging winds and pocket-change-size hail. Locally heavy rain is also a good bet. The storm chances will be associated with a southward-moving cool front going further into Texas on Wednesday and Thursday. Isolated to scattered storms will accompany the front as it marches south.
High temperatures north of the front will be a good five to twenty degrees cooler than today and tomorrow. This isn’t likely a widespread rain event for most of Texas, but some folks will get a good gully washer. It won’t be until Thursday that the higher rain chances approach Interstate 10 in South-Central and Southeast Texas.
More Storms Friday Night into the Weekend
Another uptick in thunderstorm chances will begin Friday night in the western third of Texas, and that activity will spread southeast on Saturday and Sunday to encompass the northwestern two-thirds of the state. Locally heavy rain, gusty winds, and lightning are a good bet with stronger storms. Contrast this to last July and August, when we were lucky to get days without someone in Texas hitting 115 degrees.
Our active late July weather with precipitation chances and cooler weather will continue next week. Some folks may have high temperatures sticking in the lower 80s! Hopefully, we’ll also be able to squeeze in some pleasant nights. We are not expecting any tropical mischief from the Gulf of Mexico for at least ten days, if not longer. That being said, this period will likely be the ‘quiet before the storm’.
