What is a Blue Moon?

A Blue Moon occurs when there are two full Moons during a single month or when there are four full Moons during a season. The second full Moon in a month is known as a monthly Blue Moon, while a seasonal Blue Moon is the third full Moon of an astronomical season that has four full Moons. Since the Moon’s cycle is 29.5 days, any month that has 30 or 31 days has the potential to see Blue Moon. On average, a Blue Moon occurs every two to three years and has a higher probability of occurring on a month with 31 days.
