As Hurricane Helene heads for a landfall along the Gulf Coast, communities across the Southeast are preparing for damaging wind gusts and flooding. The largest metro region, Atlanta, could see wind gusts of at least 50 mph and several inches of rainfall. Being a large city means tower cranes dot the landscape and will be subject to at least tropical storm conditions. The National Weather Service in Peachtree City, Georgia, issued a Tropical Storm Warning for the metro area, which is a rare occurrence.
Tropical Storm Isaac formed in the Atlantic on Wednesday, becoming the ninth named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park and other national parks throughout the Southeast announced closures and event cancellations due to expected weather impacts from Hurricane Helene.
