URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED Tornado Watch Number 617 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 125 PM EDT Fri Aug 9 2024 The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a * Tornado Watch for portions of western Connecticut western Massachusetts parts of central and northern New Jersey eastern New York eastern Pennsylvania central and southern Vermont * Effective this Friday afternoon and evening from 125 PM until 1000 PM EDT. * Primary threats include... A couple tornadoes possible Isolated damaging wind gusts to 65 mph possible SUMMARY...As extra-tropical cyclone Debby continues moving northeastward across eastern New York this afternoon and into this evening, potential for a few tornadoes will accompany this system -- affecting areas as far east as western New England. The tornado watch area is approximately along and 55 statute miles east and west of a line from 40 miles northwest of Rutland VT to 65 miles south of Monticello NY. Bryan Norcross: As Debby heads north there is another system to watch in the Atlantic
Tropical Disturbance #1 is a cluster of disturbed weather approaching the halfway point between Africa and the Caribbean. It's raising eyebrows because computer forecast models show it developing into a significant tropical system – possibly a hurricane – near or east of the Bahamas next week.
Debby not done as Northeast faces threat of flooding, strong winds and tornadoes
Debby was downgraded to a post-tropical storm Friday morning, but the flood and severe threat from the storm remain into the weekend.

A few tornadoes possible Isolated damaging wind gusts to 60 mph possible SUMMARY...Isolated to widely scattered thunderstorms are forecast to develop this morning into the early afternoon as a warm front advances northward across the Watch area. Several supercells will likely develop and the stronger storms will potentially yield a risk for tornadoes. Isolated damaging gusts may also accompany the more intense storms. The arrival of a La Nina has been delayed which could be good news
NOAA issued a La Niña Watch in February warning that a cold status of the El Nino Southern Oscillation could have emerged as early as the spring. Recent computer simulations show the change from neutral into an official could happen as late as this winter.
Counties warn of post-Debby mosquito invasion
Heavy rainfall associated with Hurricane Debby means streams and rivers are above flood stage and drainage systems are full of runoff, allowing mosquitoes to flourish in the standing water.
